My Family Tree 14 now available

Today we are excited to announce the release of My Family Tree 14 available now from the latest updates page.

This release contains several new features and changes in the following areas:

  • Chart colour modes
  • Filters
  • Other improvements
Chart colour modes

The range of colour modes for the chart has been expanded to include heat maps for counts of items such as citations, relationships, facts, photos, and stories. We have also added a novel feature which colour codes persons with any basic missing information.  This currently checks if information such as name(s), surname(s), birth date and place, marriage date and place (if married), and death date and place (if deceased), are present.  This is extremely helpful for flagging up where further research is needed to complete the basic information in the tree.  In future releases, this function will be enhanced to support calculations of data completion by generation, allowing you to track progress made with your research.

Filters

Additional data filters have been added to help you filter on anniversaries.  You can now type day:, death:, or marriage: followed by a day and month into any filter text box to return persons with events, deaths, or marriages on that day.  To view all available filters, and examples of how to use them, check out following help page.

Other notable improvements
  • This release is the first to use the modern .NET Desktop Runtime.  Internally, we have been running My Family Tree on the .NET Desktop Runtime since .NET 5 released back in 2020.  You will find that this first release brings a notable performance boost to the application.
  • We continue to support the new GEDCOM 7 and GEDZIP formats as these begin to see wider use in genealogy apps and services.  Minor refinements have been made to take account of the ongoing development of GEDCOM 7.
  • Direct database import has been improved to support additional file types.
  • The online help has been revised and expanded to cover all new features of the application.
  • New options have been added to take account of changes to age determination in South Korea.
  • New options have been added to customise anniversary reports.
  • New icons have been added to support easier tracking of the primary name of persons with multiple names.
  • Warnings have been added to remind users that password protected files cannot be recovered if the keys are lost.
Upgrading from earlier versions

My Family Tree requires the Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 or later which is supported on Windows 11, and Windows 10 (20H2 and later).
Users of the Microsoft Store version of My Family Tree will automatically receive the update.  For all other users the new version is available now ....

Support for obsolete Windows versions is ending

Future versions of our software will require users to be running Windows 11 or Windows 10 (20H2 or later).

Users who cannot upgrade to a supported version of Windows 11 or 10 will continue to be able to download My Family Tree version 12, but it will not receive any support, or further updates.

This change is necessary in order for us to migrate our software to newer versions of .NET, which will bring performance improvements and reduce maintenance overhead.

Microsoft ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Computers running these operating systems are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be patched. See End of support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for further help.
