My Family Tree 10.2 now available

Today we are excited to announce the release of My Family Tree 10.2 available now from the latest updates page.

This release contains several new features and changes in the following areas:

  • New colour modes for the charts
  • New direct to PDF export for the charts
  • Improved formatting of first names and middle names
  • Support for the latest version of Windows 10
New colour modes for the charts

In this release you can now choose between the default generation colour mode and the sex colour mode.

New direct to PDF export for the charts

You can now export any of the charts directly to PDF.  This feature requires Windows 10.

Improved formatting of first names and middle names

Support for handling first names and middle names varies widely across genealogy applications, in part because GEDCOM stores all a person's given names in a single field.  Unfortunately, this does not work well for many Arabic names where single name parts often contain a space.  This problem also affects double names ("John Paul", "Anne Marie" etc.) which frequently occur in other languages.  Starting in this release, it is now possible to explicitly mark first names that contain spaces to ensure that all such names are correctly displayed in scenarios where you only wish to display the first name.  Read more here.

Support for the latest version of Windows 10

Windows 10 version 2004, also known as the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, is now supported.

General fixes and improvements

All reproducible bugs reported to us have been fixed in this release.  You are encouraged to use the problem reporting tool to send reports of issues if they occur.  If you have any difficulties upgrading to version 10, please reach out to us via the support form.

Upgrading from earlier versions

My Family Tree requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 which is supported on Windows 10 (1607 and later), Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 (SP1 only).
Users of the Microsoft Store version of My Family Tree will automatically receive the update.  For all other users the new version is available now ....

New manage trees tool and export options

It has always been possible to have multiple separate trees in your database but with this release, you can now view and manage all the trees in your file from a single screen.  You can view each tree and the number of people it contains, navigate easily to the tree, delete a tree, and set a primary tree to view when the file loads.  In addition, the 'Save a copy' and 'GEDCOM export' tools have been updated with shortcuts for exporting one or more selected trees.

Direct import support for The Master Genealogist, RootsMagic, and Family Origins

Additional formats are now supported for direct import.  Direct import can be preferable if another application does not export all your data to GEDCOM, or essential if you no longer have or can no longer run an older genealogy application on a modern versions of Windows.  Full support for databases created by The Master Genealogist versions 5-9, RootsMagic version 3-7, and FamilyOrigins versions 4-7 has been added.

New calendar and date formats

You can now record dates using the Quaker calendar in addition to the 27 calendars already supported.  Support for recording 'Either … or …' dates has also been added.

New report types

A contact address report is now available to provide contact details of individuals in your tree.  You can also export a list of separate trees within your database.

General fixes and improvements

All reproducible bugs reported to us have been fixed in this release.  You are encouraged to use the problem reporting tool to send reports of issues if they occur.  If you have any difficulties upgrading to version 10, please reach out to us via the support form.

My Family Tree 10.0 now available

Today we are excited to announce the release of My Family Tree 10.0 available now from the latest updates page.

This release contains several new features and changes in the following areas:

  • New chart types
  • Chart colours
  • Family chart lines
  • Chart dates
  • New ways to build a tree
  • New report types
  • Duplicate person replace / merge tool
  • Support for additional types of marriage and relationships
New and improved charts

The interactive fan chart is a major new feature introduced for My Family Tree 10 (and one of the most requested features).  We think it looks particularly stunning in the dark application theme but you'll have to try it for yourself and decide.  By default the fan chart displays up to 6 generations of ancestors, spouses and children of the selected person (but you can expand this to 8 if you have a large enough screen!).

The ancestors chart has also been updated to support the display more generations in the same screen space as earlier versions (up to 6 by default).

Chart colours

The ancestors chart and fan charts both use colour to help differentiate between each generation of ancestors and descendants. The family chart colour schemes have also been updated to use Fluent colour design principles which provide a more harmonious look and feel.

Family chart lines

Family chart lines are rendered more crisply with fewer overlaps.

Chart dates

Chart dates have been updated to make it clearer when people are living or deceased when date information is not available.

New ways to build a tree

You can now quickly add parents / children / spouses in the fan and ancestors chart using placeholders in the chart. You can also add any kind of relationship to a person by right-click ing them in the chart.

New report types

A progeny report is now available to show the descendants of each individual.  The Ahnentafel report has been updated to support more generations.

Duplicate person replace / merge tool

You can now replace or merge duplicate individuals in the tree.  Smart matching hides completely implausible matches and star rates possible matches to help replacing or merging duplicates more straightforward.

Support for additional types of marriage and relationships

There is now built in support for common types of marriage such as religious, civil, and common law marriages.  You can also record other types of relationship such as registered partnerships, people that live together, or people who are not married.  Custom types of marriage or relationship are also supported.  Start dates can be entered for all these types of relationship.

The range of relationship statuses has also been expanded to include dissolution.
