Merge Print button

The Merge tool allows you to merge data from another family tree into the currently open file.  You can choose how to handle duplicate and new items.

Selecting a file to merge

Fig 1. Selecting a file to merge.

Once the merge process begins, items in the current file are compared with items in the file selected for merge.  You will be presented with a series of actions which are split in to two types:

  1. New items - items which do not appear in the current file.  You can choose whether or not to add these items to the current family.

  2. Duplicate items - items which might appear in the current file but have different data.  If there is more than one match, you can select the correct one. If the match is not certain (items are not backed by the same unique ID), you can reject the match by taking no action or adding as a new item.  Matches are star rated according to similarity of the data.  You can choose to:

    1. Keep the existing item - replace the duplicated item with the exiting item.

    2. Replace the existing item - replace the existing item with the duplicated item.

    3. Merge with existing item - automatically merge the duplicate item with the existing item by adding information from the duplicate item which is not already present in the existing item.

    4. Add new item - add the item to the file, ignoring any possible matches.  If the item is a person record, you can manually merge / replace / connect the person in the correct place after the merge, as required.

    5. No action - the item will not be added to the file.

Once you have chosen your actions, click continue to complete the merge.  Remember to save the file once you are happy with the changes.
